Yoga for Bhopal Week 2020: A Short History of Yoga for Bhopal

With Yoga for Bhopal Week just over a month away – September 21st to September 27th – today we are looking back to how the Yoga for Bhopal program got started and the individuals and studios around the country that have been involved in the past few years.

If you would like more information about Yoga for Bhopal Week, you can find details on the history of the Bhopal Medical Appeal, our Fundraising Guide and all resources for running an event for the Yoga for Bhopal program here

Meaghan Delahunt

The Yoga for Bhopal program was founded by Meaghan Delahunt, a yoga instructor and author, who first visited Bhopal 20 years ago. After witnessing the use of traditional yoga techniques at our Sambhavna clinic for the treatment and rehabilitation of gas survivors, Meaghan began running yoga events in the UK to fundraise for the centre. The Yoga for Bhopal program started in February 2017, when Meaghan ran a workshop for Bhopal at her yoga studio in Edinburgh.

33rd Anniversary Events

In that same year following Meaghan’s first Yoga for Bhopal event, yoga instructors and studios across the UK joined the Yoga for Bhopal program to fundraise for Bhopal. During the week of the 33rd anniversary in 2017, events took place all over the country. Some of the instructors who ran events for us included:

Adele Robertson, Pilton, Somerset

Dr. Laura Potts, Yoga for All York,  York

Emma Rattenbury, Sheffield Iyengar Yoga Centre

Abigail Peck, IsleofYoga, Isle of Wight

Lorraine Close, Santosa Yoga and Meditation, Edinburgh

The Santosa Yoga and Meditation Centre, Edinburgh

34th and 35th Anniversaries

In the past two years the program has continued to grow, with events taking place year-round. Many of those who had joined for the 33rd anniversary continued to run regular events, while a number of new members joined us for the 34th and 35th anniversaries, including:

Becky Crepsley-Fox, More Yoga Studio, Haringey, London

Marion Gilsenan, Red River Yoga, Navan, County Meath, Ireland

Yoga for Bhopal Week 2020

Many of these instructors and studios have already signed up to participate in Yoga for Bhopal Week 2020, and we would like to thank them all for their support these past few years and all the hard work they continue to put in for the people of Bhopal. We are pleased to announce that we already have a number of new signups for Yoga for Bhopal Week 2020, including several instructors in our hometown of Brighton. We will be sharing all the details of the events and locations soon – we hope to see you at one of our workshops!
