Involving the Prime Minister in their protest against Dow Chemicals, activists and survivors of the Bhopal gas tragedy sought his intervention to demand the removal of the company as a sponsor of the 2012 Olympics.
Reminding the PM that the Centre holds Dow Chemical responsible for the environmental crimes of Union Carbide — the company it took over in 2001 — the survivors requested Manmohan Singh to register a strong objection to the UK government and the Olympics Organising Committee.
An application filed by the Centre seeking Rs 100 crore from Dow for remediation of the toxic contamination in and around the abandoned factory is pending in the Madhya Pradesh High Court since 2005, the letter to the PM pointed out. The survivors alleged that the company was not accepting its legal liability for Bhopal victims but had accepted outstanding liabilities in the US.
