Confusion prevails over Bhopal waste disposal

NAGPUR: After the High Court in Madhya Pradesh directed the disposal of Bhopal waste in Nagpur and the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court clamped a stay on it, confusion also prevails in getting a departmental nod for doing away with the toxic material lying on Union Carbide’s premises.

Even before the waste could reach Nagpur, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) received a communication from its counterpart in Madhya Pradesh, asking if the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) had taken permission from the regulator in Maharashtra.

The MPCB headquarters at Mumbai quickly shot a letter to the office in Nagpur, which, in turn, sent one to the DRDO’s local office asking if it applied for a permission. It also demanded that MPCB officials should be allowed inspect the premises in Nagpur as well as see the designs of the machines lying in the DRDO area. The DRDO’s site in Nagpur has remained a secret location owing to security reasons.
