Naom Chomsky, the renown MIT academic who is known as a philosopher, political critic and activist has warned that Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, India, could be another Bhopal disaster waiting to happen.
Chomsky, who has long been a supporter of the movement for justice in Bhopal, has now expressed support towards the Koodankulam anti-nuclear campaign.
In his letter to the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy, Chomsky said, ‘Nuclear energy is a very dangerous initiative, particularly in countries like India, which has had more than its share of industrial disasters, Bhopal being the most famous,’ while expressing his support by adding that `I would like to express my support for the courageous people’s movement protesting the opening of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
In Koodankulam, protestors have been struggling continuously against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant in peaceful and nonviolent manner for almost a quarter of a century, with a recent concerted campaign for the last 450 days.
The protestors are have been holding out hunger strikes, rallies, public meetings, seminars, conferences, and other demonstrations such as burning models of the nuclear plant. Opposition stems from the argument that more than 1 million people live within the 30 km radius of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant and local residents fear a Fukishima like disaster.
