As Covid-19 cases continue to rise in India, the Madhya Pradesh state government announced that the one week lockdown in Bhopal announced last Monday, April 12th, will be extended another week until Monday, April 26th. Currently the second wave in India continues to worsen, with total cases passing more than 200,000 per day in the country for the last 4 days.
In response to the lockdown announcement last week, the Chingari clinic has closed until further notice. The Sambhavna clinic remains open and the community health team, along with the network of community volunteers, continue their work to battle the spread of coronavirus, provide testing for survivors in local neighbourhoods, and refer those with serious cases to local hospitals for treatment.
The situation in Bhopal remains fraught, with reports that the number of coronavirus deaths recorded by local crematoriums far outstrips the official government figures for the city. There have also been reports in recent weeks that government hospitals are running low on both beds and medical supplies, and that 850 injections of the vaccine were stolen from one of the government hospitals.
