Crisis in Supreme Court Puts Survivors in Limbo

A crisis in the Supreme Court of India has seen the survivors left in limbo as meetings of the Constitution Bench have been postponed in the wake of a scandal involving the Chief Justice of India. A curative petition, aiming to address the inadequacy of the 1989 civil settlement of the Bhopal Disaster had been due for a hearing in April but the court lies in stasis while the scandal rages.

On April 19, a former junior assistant to Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi filed a complaint accusing him of sexually harassing her in 2018. In response, Justice Gogoi convened an urgent three-judge bench on April 20 to hear the matter. Justice Gogoi did not notify the complainant and personally presided over the hearing, reframing the complaint as an attack on judicial independence and rejecting the allegations.
