Covid-19 Update: November

Every week in Bhopal, Community Health Workers (CHW’s) from Sambhavna and teams of Community Health Volunteers (CHV’s) from local neighbourhoods screen local residents for Covid-19 symptoms, refer those who test positive for treatment, and carry out other essential community health work for survivors. In November, teams of Community Health Volunteers screened over 300 residents in 15 neighbourhoods for coronavirus. Here is all the work they achieved specifically related to Covid-19:

  • 310 individuals displaying symptoms were screened for Covid-19
  • 19 patients were referred to the Sambhavna clinic for treatment
  • 16 patients displaying more serious symptoms were referred to local hospitals for Covid-19 treatment
  • ‘What to do until next rainy season’ posters offering advice for coping with Covid-19 were put up in multiple neighbourhoods
  • Posters offering advice on correct social distancing and how to self-isolate were put up in multiple neighbourhoods
  • 13 individuals identified as especially vulnerable were given safety advice on Covid-19
  • 29 new Community Health Volunteers were recruited to the program

Additionally, the following essential health work was carried out by Community Health Volunteers in these 12 neighbourhoods:

  • 87 local residents were taught home remedies for self treatment during lockdown
  • 134 people were prescribed medicines for existing health conditions
  • 71 people were prescribed ayurvedic treatments for existing health conditions
  • 59 people were prescribed herbal remedies for existing health conditions
  • 11 CHV’s were trained in thermal scanning
  • 9 CHV’s were taught to measure blood pressure
  • 9 CHV’s were taught pulse oximetry
  • 127 people were given health education on dietary health
  • 40 people were given health education on tuberculosis
  • 27 houses were surveyed for mosquito larvae, with contaminated water being removed in two cases
  • 69 people were given health education on typhoid
  • 17 people were given health education on anaemia
  • 10 people were given health education on hypertension
  • 13 people were given health education on the medicinal uses of herbs
  • 5 women were given follow-up appointments for help during pregnancy
  • One person was given a follow up appointment for treatment of hypertension
  • CHV’s created new community herb gardens in two neighbourhoods
