Welcome New Trustee Sumohon Matilal!

We are delighted to announce that Sumohon Matilal, a long time supporter and associate, has formally joined the BMA as a member of our board of Trustees.

An Associate Professor at the Sussex University Business School, Sumohon’s research interests lie in critical accounting, a genre that considers accounting to be a social and political construct. Sumohon’s research examines the ways in which accounting information, under the guise of numerical objectivity and a ‘true and fair view’, is used to communicate with wider audiences to attain specific objectives – be it to legitimise certain actions, embellish particular notions while excluding others, manipulate or control public opinion, structure popular formations, and so forth. Questioning the efficacy of the ‘one size fits all’ approach of accounting schemes in representing organisational reality, Sumohon has examined corporate accounting against the backdrop of catastrophic scenarios such as Union Carbide’s Bhopal disaster, and his research advocates the need for restoring plurivocality to accounting practice.

We are delighted to have someone with Sumohon’s expertise and experience on the team, and greatly look forward to working with him.
