Yoga Leeds Giving Back to India

Bhopal gas disaster, yoga used as treatment for woman's problems

Yoga has been used to great success at the Sambhavna Clinic in Bhopal

On Sunday 17th March 2013 the Yoga Kula Studio in Leeds are to hold a fundraising day dedicated to the woman survivors of the Bhopal disaster.

The event will be hosted by Yoga Kula where members of the yoga community will practice a marathon 108 Sun Salutations. They are fundraising in aid of women, from the Indian city of Bhopal, who are still experiencing the ongoing effects of two major environmental disasters. These women suffer, amongst other things, severe gynecological, endocrinal, and reproductive problems.

The Sambhavna Clinic, funded by UK charity the Bhopal Medical Appeal, has remarkable success treating these problems with yoga and the money raised will help fund the clinic.

The 108 Sun Salutations are usually performed in large groups and often as an “offering” of peace or unity at a change of the seasons. Yoga Kula will dedicate their March 17th practice as an offering to the women of Bhopal. The focus will be on how Yoga transforms the lives of people in Bhopal affected by the gas disaster.

Yoga Kula aims to forge a connection between its own community members and women patients at the Sambhavna Trust Clinic who practice Yoga therapy as both a method of health care and a form of empowerment. Men and women of all ages are invited to join the Yoga Kula initiative.

Yoga Kula teacher and co-director Angela Sykes thinks that many people will want to be involved in this initiative “in the spirit of giving something back to India, for the wonderful gift of Yoga that we have received.”

We believe Dow must finally accept responsibility for Bhopal. Until then, The Bhopal Medical Appeal funds two award-winning clinics in the city. Both offer free, first-class care to victims of the gas disaster or the ongoing water contamination. The survivors have nowhere else left to turn – please help if you can.
