On Sunday the 17th March 2013 the Yoga Kula Studio in Leeds held a fundraiser dedicated to the woman survivors of the Bhopal disaster where members of the Yoga Kula community practiced 108 Sun Salutations. Sun Salutations are usually performed in large groups and often as an “offering” of peace or unity at a change of the seasons.
Funds were raised in aid of women from Bhopal, India who are still experiencing the ongoing effects of two major environmental disasters. Many women in Bhopal suffer from severe gynecological, endocrinal, and reproductive problems as a result of the 1984 Union Carbide gas tragedy and the more recent widespread water contamination in the city. The Sambhavna Clinic, funded by UK charity the Bhopal Medical Appeal, has remarkable success treating these problems with yoga and the money raised will go towards funding yoga at the clinic.
Yoga Kula wanted to forge a connection between its own community members and women patients at the Sambhavna Trust Clinic who practice Yoga therapy as both a method of health care and a form of empowerment. Focus was placed on how Yoga transforms the lives of people in Bhopal affected by the gas disaster. Men and women of all ages were invited to join the Yoga Kula initiative.
Thanks to all who took part and to Angela Sykes from the Yoga Kula studio in Chapel Allerton in Leeds for hosting such a wonderful event.
