Brighton Marathon runners for Bhopal

Jonjo and Tom, cool, calm and grinning after 26.2 miles (left).

About 8,000 people pounded the seafront and streets of Brighton in the city’s second marathon, and thousands of spectators lined the 26.2 mile route, which began in Preston Park and finished on Madeira Drive.

Philemon Kiprop Boit, from Kenya, completed the route in the fastest time, at 2:16:07. The women’s winner was Alyson Dixon at 2:34:51 – she smashed the previous women’s record by over half an hour.

Twas a tough day in the heat – great for the cheering groups, not so good for the runners of course. And in the thousands were ten runners for Bhopal. Huge congratulations to you all: Mohibul Haque, Jonjo Hancock, Tom Ward, Richard Gallagher, Jonathan Cooper, Kay Watson, Mike Smith, Tareq Shrourou, Mark Cooper and Rupert Burgess, and to Neil who ran the Paris Marathon in 3:45. We believe Dow must finally accept responsibility for Bhopal. Until then, The Bhopal Medical Appeal funds two award-winning clinics in the city. Both offer free, first-class care to victims of the gas disaster or the ongoing water contamination. The survivors have nowhere else left to turn – please help if you can.
