Ajmat

Ajmat was born in 1995 to gas-affected parents. His father, Masroor, is a house painter. The family lives in New Arif Nagar and have had to drink, bathe in, and cook with water from a contaminated tubewell.

Ajmat was born at home and nursed on mother's milk for two years. His growth is retardedand he is slowly losing his vision. He has had no medical treatment at all, but manages to attend school at Anganbadi.

Akash was born in 1990 at Lady Hospital, he is weak and has a hunched back. He nursed on mother's milk until he was five. He has been treated at 1250, Jawaharlal Nehru, Hamdia Hospital and at the Sambhavna Clinic. He goes to school,

Akash was born in June 1996, two months prematurely. He nursed on his mother's milk for just one month. Both parents are gas-affected. His father, Diwan Singh, runs a telephone booth. The family lives in Garib Nagar ("poor town"). Their water comes from a handpump. Akshay is mentally retarded. He has deformed legs and is very weak, unable to fold his legs. He suffers from persistent colds and coughs. He had treatment at Hamidia Hospital and then at private hospital. His handicap prevents him from going to school, his parents can't afford special schooling.

Arif was born in Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital and was treated there when younger. He is mentally retarded, suffers from headaches and cannot digest food.

He goes to school. At age 13 he was still in the first grade. He is unable to write. Unfortunately he also has a violent streak

Born in 2003, he was two when his picture was taken.  Both parents are gas-affected. His father Devilal is a labourer. The family live in Prem Nagar and for the last 15 years have had to drink, bathe and wash clothes in tubewell water. Arjun was born at home. His mother breast fed him for ten months. His legs are malformed. He is unable to stand and has a distended stomach.

Arjun was treated at private clinic. The doctor gave his parents no documents, and such medicines as he prescribed were wrapped in newspaper.
