International Women’s Week: Women of Bhopal Exhibition

Bhopal gas disaster women survivors

A collection of photographs celebrating International Women’s Week will be displayed at the Nehru Centre in London next week. The photos, taken by artist Sharmila Runa Green, focus on local women from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, engaged in their normal everyday activities. Many are working mothers. Some make jewellery or clothes for a living. Others are construction workers. The photos also display vibrant clothes and extraordinary tribal jewellery.

Please note:
These photos, taken with a small non-intrusive camera, capture women at that moment – are not not staged. They aim to show the dignity and strength of these women indicating the personal link that was created between the photographer and the subject.

About Sharmila: after obtaining a degree in Fashion and Textiles from Manchester University she worked in Italy with Pino Lancetti in Rome. Sharmila has lived in India, Maldives and Nepal.

The exhibition will be displayed from the 11th-15th March 2013 during office hours.
